Orientation checklist: what to bring and what to expect
Show up ready and start driving sooner.
Orientation usually takes two to five days, sometimes online first. Missing one document can push your start back a week.
Documents to bring
- Your CDL (with the right endorsements) and DOT medical card.
- Documents to prove you can work in the US (Form I-9), for example a passport, or a driver's license plus a Social Security card or birth certificate. Bring originals.
- Your work history for the last 3 years (10 years if you have driven commercially before), with company names, dates and phone numbers.
- Any paperwork for past accidents or tickets you discussed with your recruiter.
- Your bank details for direct deposit.
What to pack
Clothes for several days, steel-toe or sturdy boots if required, gloves, a rain jacket, phone charger, snacks, any prescription medication, and money for meals (ask whether meals are provided).
What usually happens
- Paperwork, policies and safety videos.
- Drug screen (sometimes hair as well as urine) and sometimes a physical.
- Road test and skills check.
- Equipment training: ELD, in-cab system, the truck you will drive.
Before you leave home
Confirm with your recruiter: the orientation address and start time, who pays for travel and lodging, whether orientation is paid, and who to call if your bus or flight is late. We send you these in writing.
